Laura, or Irina as she wants to be called now, is building a life for herself as a writer in the city of Copenhagen, far away from her family. She has recently published a successful debut novel about her childhood in the Danish countryside, which was mainly marked by bullying at school. When she learns her brother will get married, she is forced to finally return to her childhood home. There, she has to discover that her future sister-in-law is none other than Cathrine, Laura’s worst bully throughout high school. And if that’s not enough, Laura realises her brother’s fiancée has already taken over her place within the family. Frustration and anger build up and with it a strong urge to get her revenge. This Danish dramedy has some common ground with director Lisa Jespersen's personal life. Persona non grata takes an intimate look at the difficult family relationships that arise when the person you have become no longer corresponds with where you came from.
