The pressure on the city is rising. Housing prices are reaching unprecedented levels and tourism is creating masses in cities. The countryside is experiencing shrinkage and disappearing amenities. City leavers offer a hopeful perspective. Are they part of the solution? Do they form the new élan for the countryside? In the documentary Weg uit de stad (Leaving the City), directors Tom Tieman and Saskia Jeulink follow two couples who have left the city for a new life in the countryside. Andor Molter, after years of living in now unaffordable Amsterdam, returns with his partner and child to the village of Borgercompagnie in Groningen to start a new life in an old school. In Uithuizermeeden, also in Groningen, two young gardeners, Jouke Anema and Liz Wijma, take over a biodynamic farm in the midst of traditional farmers. How will both couples fare? Will they feel at home in their new environment?
