Denmark, 1918. When Danish men are called up for battle alongside German soldiers during World War I, Erna's 17-year-old simple-minded son Kalle must also enlist. Determined to protect her son, Erna makes a decision: she joins the army too. With the identity of a deserted soldier, Erna heads to the front dressed like a man. Sergeant Meyer helps Erna in return for the promise of marriage, but in the trenches Erna finds her blossoming love for fellow soldier Anton. Amid the horrors of war, she is also confronted with her son's newly found independence. Erna at War is based on the book by Erling Jepsen and tells a story about the infinite and sometimes suffocating size of a mother's heart, starring Danish top actors Trine Dyrholm as Erna and Ulrich Thomsen as Meyer. The drama received great reviews and was awarded the Valhalla Award for Best Nordic Film at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival 2021.
