An unexpected discovery turns the lives of María and Ingvar around. The couple has not been blessed with a child, but when they find a mysterious newborn in the sheep barn of their remote Icelandic farm, the hope of a happy family life and parenthood fills them with joy. Though, their happiness will not last forever. Eventually they will have to discover the cruel consequences of defying nature’s will. With beautiful scenic imagery and the invested performance of Noomi Rapace as María, Valdimir Jóhannsson’s debut feature builds an anticipating tension. Shifting between funny, creepy and sad moments he tells a unique and shocking story in a dark and twisted way. No surprise this contemporary folk horror won the prize of originality at the Cannes this year.
